Florida will not appeal a court ruling stopping the state’s ban on adoption by gays and lesbians. The only remaining state to prohibit gay adoption will stop enforcing the law that banned the Department of Children and Families from providing neglected children homes headed by gays or lesbians.
“We had weighed an appeal to the Florida Supreme Court to achieve an ultimate certainty and finality for all parties,” said Joe Follick, the department’s communications director. “But the depth, clarity and unanimity of the DCA opinion … has made it evident that an appeal would have a less than limited chance of a different outcome.”
The pressures put on by the LGBT movement have made this a victory of the people. This being said, the movement must continue to fight for full and complete equality.
The law and ban on adopting by homosexuals was over 30 years old in Florida. With the ban overturned, Frank Martin Gill became the first openly gay person to adopt a child.
