Carlos Alvarez is the Peace and Freedom candidate running for Calif. Governor. He is also a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
The Carlos Alvarez Campaign for Governor will create jobs, while also defending unemployment benefits that have been gained through decades of struggle by workers. The Alvarez campaign believes that every worker who is put out of work in the capitalist system has a right to unemployment benefits.
Alvarez said, “Some analysts are predicting a $20 billion deficit in the California Unemployment Insurance Fund next year—the equivalent of the entire state deficit for this year. As over 2.5 million Californians are jobless, the payout for unemployment has reached $11 billion per year while employers only paid $4.5 billion a year toward the fund and this is leading Californians down a path toward destruction. The economic crisis has not been resolved and jobs have yet to be created that will replace the millions that have been lost. Unemployment benefits were extended because too many workers were falling off the rolls, and now the federal government is propping up the California fund.
“This clearly illustrates that capitalism is a failed social system because it fails to provide the most basic needs to the vast majority of people in society—the workers. If this fund bottoms out and cuts are made to unemployment or people are pushed off the rolls then the results could be disastrous.”
Alvarez added, “I will get rid of this looming crisis by raising taxes on the super-rich, corporations, banks and Big Oil—reversing Schwarzenegger’s horrendous farewell budget. I will fully fund all social benefits and programs. More than that, I will create jobs with union protection, a livable wage, and a pension by expanding public works projects to improve California’s infrastructure. It is time the capitalists pay for the crisis they created.”
No worker should suffer because of joblessness when all the jobs are being liquidated by rich bosses. The campaign will fight to make sure the burden of the crisis falls on the shoulders of those that created it.
