The Carlos Alvarez Campaign for Governor demands that all foreclosures and evictions in California be ended immediately. There campaign always made this a central demand in order to ease the suffering of working families. But and now GMAC Mortgage, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America are calling off foreclosures—not because it is what people need amidst an economic crisis created by these very banks—but because they were caught falsifying notarizations, “robo-signing” foreclosure documents and forging signatures that lead to the theft of working families’ homes.
Alvarez said, “Bankers are thieves plain and simple. Nothing illustrates this more than the reckless abandon of banks in their ever intensified drive for super-profits. After giving working families unemployment, homelessness and debt in the midst of the foreclosure crisis, banks immediately went on the offensive to foreclose millions of homes—many of them foreclosed by illegal means. They have only stopped because they were caught.
“But there is a way to rectify the convenient mistakes made by profiteering banks. Not only do I demand an end to all foreclosures—including those being carried out by other banks—I demand that all homes foreclosed upon since the start of the foreclosure crisis be seized along with the more than 20 million vacant homes in the U.S., so that these can be used to house the millions of people who are homeless or in substandard housing. All working and poor people have the right to live in a home!”
Alvarez is a socialist candidate that is fighting to build the movement for socialism. Socialism as a system would eradicate capitalist crises like the foreclosure crisis by planning our economy to meet the needs of people rather than the profits of a few. Under socialism every worker would have a right to a home and would never face the threat of having their home taken away from them.
