In Muskegon, Mich., the voice of the senior class was taken away when their elected homecoming king was disqualified by the school administration. The victimized student at Mona Shores High School, Oakleigh Reed, was disqualified because he is listed on the school rolls as a girl.
The assistant superintendent, Todd Geerlings, stated, ”The issue is simple: The ballots gave two choices—vote for a boy for king and a girl for queen.”
Students recognize the unjust discriminatory actions by the administrators of their school. They agree that the administrators purloined the homecoming king’s throne and have formed a Facebook group titled “Oak is My King.”
While LGBT youth suffer from harassment and bullying at many schools, the fact that Reed was elected Homecoming King (notwithstanding the theft of his crown) is indicative of changing attitudes towards LGBT equality among young people as a result of the struggle for liberation.
