The meeting brought students from Ohio State University, Capital University and Columbus State Community College together to talk about the struggle for socialism in the United States.
Presentations were given by members from the Party for Socialism and Liberation from Chicago, Cleveland, and Columbus.
The speeches covered:Why the Obama administration continues to conduct an unwinnable colonial war on Afghanistan; The importance of the struggle against racism; The fight against education cuts in Ohio; A review of the pro-capitalist policies of the democratic party controlled government in Washington over the last two years; and Why people should vote for the Party for Socialism and Liberation and not the democrats or republicans.
Students at the event were excited to hear an alternative to the normal double-speak of the ruling class oriented Democrat and Republican parties.
Andrew Floor a student at Capital University said, “I was a registered Democrat that worked on the Obama campaign, but hearing about the contradictions of the Democrats has me thinking more. I’m definitely interested in what the PSL is doing.”
Amer Khader, a student at Ohio State University and member of the Committee for Justice in Palestine, said, “I believe in Corey’s campaign and I am willing to do what it takes to get the word out about his candidacy.”
John Beacham, the PSL Midwest organizer spoke at the meeting. He said, “We believe that workers can defeat racism and win jobs only by building a mass movement and building our own fighting organizations like the PSL. The Democrats have ruled Washington for the last two years and have helped to escalate the war on Afghanistan, the war on public education, the war on immigrants, the war on unions and all workers. They’ve presided over the worst epidemic of job and home losses in 70 years, while Wall Street profits have soared with direct aid from both capitalist parties.”
“Now, as life for so many workers is so desolate, both parties are trying to bully us and scare us into voting for them as the only the solution to the crisis. But there is another option open to workers. In fact, whoever wins Congress in 2010, we will need to take to the streets in 2011 and beyond to make change. A vote for a PSL candidate in 2010 is a vote to break up the status quo. It’s a vote to build a mass movement. It’s a vote for people over profit.”
A team of campaign volunteers has been passing out leaflets and going door to door, talking to people about what will bring real change: building a people’s movement for jobs, equality and peace. Ansel is scheduled to give press interviews in the upcoming weeks.
