There are many concerns for the fishermen who have suffered from the disastrous BP oil spill. One of the major difficulties these workers in Louisiana are enduring is housing.
The fishermen’s contracts with BP stated they were to be housed in motels or somewhere provided by BP. As of now, they are housed in what are referred to as “flotels” or “quarter boats.”
One worker compared the living conditions to jail, saying, “If I wanted to be in prison, I would break the law and go to jail.” The fishermen decided to go on strike. They are demanding to be placed in better housing paid for by BP, because most of them have not been compensated for their claims against BP.
The fishermen working on the cleanup face safety, privacy and health concerns because of cramped and unsafe housing conditions. BP has refused to meet the just demands of the fishermen.
