On June 2, Colombian military
commandos attempted to break up a mobilization against British Petroleum that
has been going on for five months, seeking to defeat workers’ actions against
the oil corporation. The BP workers are demanding pay increases, better working
conditions and job security. BP has continually violated the human rights of
the workers. Installations have been occupied since May 23.
Colombia is one of the most dangerous
countries for union activists.
Some of the striking workers say
that they were verbally and physically abused. BP has provided support to the
military forces in Colombia since the early 1990s.
“BP thinks that we will give up, tired
and afraid but we will put up with these conditions as this is a
struggle for everyone,” said Ramiro from the Movement for Dignity of Casanare.
BP’s
crimes against humanity are seen across the globe. Colombian workers have the
right to resist!
