Wellesley College action protests SB 1070

On May 6, Wellesley
College women organized a Day of Action Against SB 1070, utilizing a visibility
campaign in solidarity with immigrants. Volunteers for the event signed up for
different dining halls all across campus during lunch and passed out stickers
that read “Stop SB 1070,” “Education, not Deportation” and “Amnistia Ahora.”

The event was a major
success, with over 400 confirmed guests on Facebook’s event page. Many students
on campus that day wore stickers in solidarity with immigrants and workers
everywhere.

The Wellesley women
who played major roles in organizing the May 6 event were inspired to do so
after attending the May Day march and rally that took place in nearby Boston.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation is a member of the Boston May Day
Committee, which organized the May 1demonstration.

The May Day event
attracted protesters who were enraged at the anti-immigrant law.

Wellesley College
students are outraged at the extremely racist law that was passed on April 23.
SB 1070 gives local police in Arizona authority to arrest and detain people
based on their immigration status. The police are granted the right to detain
and arrest anyone they have “reasonable suspicion” to believe are undocumented
immigrants. “Reasonable suspicion” is a euphemism for Latinos and people of
color. SB 1070 has already demonstrated its racist character.

The people must
continue to fight not only the racist SB 1070 but all apartheid laws cropping
up across the country.
