British Airways was hit by two strikes in March. Workers for the airline company have brought hundreds of flights to a standstill, with more to come if the workers’ demands are not met.
The British Airways workers are furious over the announcement of crew reductions on flights, along with massive pay freezes. The strikes may continue due to the airline company’s refusal to discuss demands of the staff and crew. In order to undermine the strike actions, British Airways is offering contracts to new recruits to attempt to avoid meeting workers’ demands.
Some areas of England, such as the city of Newcastle, have seen nearly 60 percent of flights cancelled in the area. Other major cities are not far behind.
The struggle over work conditions and wages is inherent in capitalism: more work and less pay for workers means more profits for the capitalists. As long as there is capitalism, these struggles will continue.
