From Rhode Island to California utility shut-offs are on the rise. Around 31,000 households in Rhode Island had their utilities shut off in 2009, according to a recent New York Times article.
The cost of utilities has gone up along with the unemployment rate in the U.S., but congress is keeping the $5.1 billion budget for federal energy assistance the same in 2010.
Working people all over the U.S. are feeling the crunch of the capitalist financial crisis. Hikes in tuition, public transportation and other public services are prevalent in cities all over the country.
