As Afghan resistance to colonial occupation intensified this month, Matthew Hoh, a civilian representative of the U.S. government in Afghanistan’s Zabul province, resigned over the Afghanistan war. In a four-page resignation letter, Hoh wrote that he had lost understanding as to “how and to what end” the United States is continuing the war on Afghanistan.
Hoh likened the U.S. puppet regime to the United State’s support for the “corrupt and unpopular” government in South Vietnam. He suggested the war is not “winnable.”
In a trend that is likely to continue, October was the deadliest month of the occupation for U.S. forces. In a country faced with the everyday brutalities and atrocities of an eight-year-long occupation, the Afghan resistance is growing.
Hoh’s letter reflects the reality of the crisis for U.S. imperialism: The U.S. will never be able to force the people of Afghanistan to accept the colonization of their country.
