As Pakistan’s government continues its full-scale offensive in the northwest of the country, there have been reports of hundreds of bodies dumped on the streets. Bodies have been found with torture marks and a bullet to the neck or head.
Aftab Ahmed Sherpao, a senior politician from the Swat Valley region and a former interior minister said, “There have been reports of extrajudicial killings by the military that are of concern. This will not help bring peace.” (New York Times, Sept. 15)
One man by the name of Akhtar Ali, 28, was arrested at his electrical shop in Mingora on Sept. 1 by a group of soldiers. Four days later, his body was returned to the family home tortured to death.
The United States directly funds the military responsible for these crimes. The U.S.-supported Pakistan government is turning a blind eye to the atrocities committed, as they and their imperialist backers use any means available to them to crush resistance.
