Millions of care giving workers in dire financial straits

A new survey by Evercare and the National Alliance for Caregiving indicates that approximately 17 percent of 44 million U.S. caregivers—those who care for elderly or ill family members in the home—have lost their jobs during the current economic crisis. Twenty-one percent of caregivers have been forced to move in with other family members to save money.

At the same time, government assistance has been decimated by budget cuts, leaving caregivers on their own to care for loved ones.

Although economic security under capitalism is never guaranteed for workers, families with dependents are particularly vulnerable. Caregivers, on average, spend $6,000 a year to take care of loved ones who are either too old or too sick to work.

Capitalism is a criminal system that casts aside workers when they are in the greatest need, even if they have labored for decades to help create vast amounts of wealth for the ruling class.
