A study released in May by the Center for Immigration Policy shows there is no correlation between unemployment and immigration. The study also concludes that immigration acts in reality as an economic “lubricant” during times of capitalist economic downturn. Mark Knold, chief economist at the Utah Department of Workforce Services, explained that undocumented immigration increases when the capitalist economy demands it, and immigration slows during recessions. Currently, new immigrants make up about 5.4 percent of the workforce, which is too small to sway the overall job market. The study exposes the lies in the anti-immigrant propaganda promoted by the ruling class. The economic crisis has nothing to do with immigrants and everything to do with the capitalist’s hunger to hoard profit. As workers, we are all on the same boat. Every worker is getting hit hard with cutbacks so the rich can rescue their profits. Racist attacks that pit worker against worker must be countered. Only through unity can workers fight back and win.
