In early September, a group of intellectuals and artists living in Cuba gathered 1,000 prominent endorsements in less than 24 hours for an email appeal opposing the economic blockade of Cuba.
To date, more than 7,000 artists, writers, journalists, academicians and others in 30 countries have signed on to the call, made all the more important by the economic impact of recent hurricanes.
“We are appealing to the sensitivity of intellectuals and artists all over the world to demand an immediate end of the criminal U.S. blockade and to promote actions of solidarity and help for Cuba,” the appeal says.
On Oct. 29, the U.N. General Assembly will vote on a Cuba-sponsored non-binding call to end the U.S.-imposed blockade This will be the 17th time the General Assembly votes on the issue. In 2007, 184 countries voted against the criminal blockade, with only 4 countries supporting it.
