Michigan Republicans plan to disenfranchise voters

Under the guise of protecting against voter fraud, the Republican Party in Michigan plans to challenge voters who have lost their homes to foreclosure.

According to The Michigan Messenger, an extension of the Center for Independent Media, Republicans plan to use a list of foreclosed homes to challenge victims of the housing fiasco on election day by claiming that they are not “true residents.” The Messenger said that James Carabelli, chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, revealed the plan in a telephone interview.

Carabelli has denied making the comments and threatened to sue, but the Michigan Messenger is standing by its story.

The Republican tactic could have an impact. According to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, more than 60 percent of the people with subprime loans—those most susceptible to foreclosure—are Black. Michigan has the 7th highest foreclosure rate in the country.
