Davis, a Black man, was sentenced to death for the murder of police officer Mark Allen MacPhail in Savannah despite a complete lack of physical evidence. Even the murder weapon was never found.
Witness testimony was the only basis for the racist conviction. However, nearly all witnesses have subsequently recanted or contradicted their original statements. All but two witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that police coerced them to testify against Davis.
Davis supporters have been aggressively fighting against this legal lynching. Last year, supporters pressured the board into granting a temporary reprieve less than 24 hours before his scheduled execution. On Sept. 11, a rally was held outside the Georgia State Capitol to raise awareness about Davis’ case.
