Justice Department may reduce Abramoff’s sentence

The Justice Department recently recommended a reduced sentence for imprisoned lobbyist, Jack Abramoff. The potential sentence reduction comes as a reward for aiding a federal investigation into political corruption.

Abramoff, one of the most powerful and connected lobbyists in Washington, was sentenced in 2006 for defrauding banks of $23 million in his purchase of a Florida casino cruise line. He also pleaded guilty to charges of fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials. His criminal activities had devastating economic impacts on two Indian tribes in Texas and Louisiana, resulting in the loss of hundreds of jobs.

On the rare occasion that white-collar-criminals are convicted, they are routinely given minimal sentences, largely as symbolic gestures for public consumption. This stands in stark contrast to the excessive sentencing of poor and oppressed people, frequently for non-violent crimes.
