A local CBS affiliate recently exposed that Denver police have set up cages in a warehouse to hold jailed protesters at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
Protesters have dubbed the site “Gitmo on the Platte,” in reference to Guantanamo Bay prison and the river running through Denver.
The facility holds dozens of metal cages made of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire. Each cage is about 5 yards by 5 yards and has a lock on the door. A sign on the wall reads: “Warning! Electric stun devices used in this facility.”
Mass arrests are frequently used to silent public dissent. During the 2004 Democratic and Republican National Conventions, hundreds of protesters were swept up in mass arrests.
City officials, surprised by the unexpected exposure, have responded with community outreach programs in a save-face effort to justify the attack against demonstrators.
