Aug. 13 marked two weeks since the Colombian Truckers Association (ACC) went on strike in Colombia. The strike has had a huge effect on food imports and major exports like coffee and bananas.
More than 100,000 truckers have joined the strike. It began with 200 truckers holding a rally in Bogota to pressure the government to help with the rising cost of fuel. The truckers are also demanding that the government guarantee fair freight costs and provide assistance to replace older vehicles.
The Uribe government responded by declaring the strike illegal, and saying serious penalties and sanctions would be enforced.
The ACC and the Transportation Ministry have been in talks but no agreements have been reached. The union has said that they would like nothing more than to reach an agreement so that they can get back to work, but they will not back down from their demands.
