On May 6, Britain announced a new racist immigration policy. Under the new rules, immigrant workers from outside the European Union will have to speak “good” English and prove that they will make over $47,000 a year before they can enter the country.
In other words, low-wage, non-European workers will find it nearly impossible to seek work in England.
The new policy comes amidst an increase in government attacks against immigrants. According to Immigration Minister Liam Byrne, the Home Office carried out 40 percent more workplace actions in 2007 than in the previous year. Britain will also begin issuing separate mandatory ID cards for all “foreign nationals” later this year.
Anti-immigrant attacks are part of a campaign on the part of the British government to divide workers in a time of economic crisis.
