ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, has announced that they will eliminate 575 jobs at the Gandrange plant located in the Lorraine region of France, a region already suffering from severe unemployment due to the loss of industries and massive layoffs.

After being refused entry into a meeting between management and union leaders, over 60 workers forced their way into their boss’s office, throwing furniture and files out of the window.

In 2006, billionaire Laxmi Mittal took over the steel plant pledging not to cut any jobs. Less than two years later, he is planning to cut the number of Gandrange employees in half by 2009.

In February, French president Sarkozy publicly promised that state funds would be used to keep the plant open and French workers employed. Now, the French government has announced it has no plans of saving the plant or workers jobs.
