Belarus announced on March 25 that it will assist Venezuela in the creation of an updated anti-aircraft defense system.

The system will be built over the next six years and will include training of Venezuelan commanders and administrators. Military advisers and specialists will be sent to Venezuela this year to begin the process.

The plan is part of a larger set of Belarusian-Venezuelan agreements set to be ratified this spring. Trade and economic cooperation between the two countries are also included in the international agreements.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez has purchased aircraft and arms from Russia in an effort to modernize and expand Venezuela’s armed forces. Venezuela has recently strengthened economic and military ties with countries such as Belarus, which are on the U.S. imperialists’ hit list.
