Alameda students protest education budget cuts

Alameda High School students walked out on March 5 to protest massive school budget cuts. The district is cutting sports and music programs to offset a $4.5-million shortfall. Hundreds of students marched and rallied against the budget cuts.

The cuts are an issue across California. Gov. Schwarzenegger has proposed cutting $4 billion from education and suspending Proposition 98, which guarantees elementary schools and community colleges funding from the state’s general funds.

In the San Francisco district, between 500 and 1,000 layoff notices are being sent to teachers and paraprofessionals because of a $40 million cut whose broad impact will affect teachers, English Language programs and more.

United Educators of San Francisco will hold a March 11 rally against the budget cuts.
