Abu Treika shed his team’s sweater before dozens of television cameras and millions of fans, revealing a t-shirt with the slogan “Sympathize with Gaza” in English and Arabic.
Although Abu Treika was given a yellow card for “unsportsmanlike conduct,” he was applauded throughout the Arab world for his declaration of support for the Palestinians in a time of crisis.
Abu Treika’s actions came days after Palestinians blasted through the barrier separating Egypt and Gaza to obtain badly needed food, supplies and medicine. His gesture against the criminal Israeli siege of Gaza stands in contrast with the inaction of regional Arab leaders who bow to U.S. interests.
