Inflation jumps to highest rate in 17 years

Inflation in the United States reached its highest rate in 17 years. The most amazing increase was that of energy prices—which jumped 17.4 percent.

The price of food also rose 4.9 percent. In August 2007, the USDA estimated that the average monthly cost of food for a family of four that bought all of its food at thrifty prices and cooked only at home was around $540. A roughly 5 percent increase means an additional $27 a month or $324 a year. Working-class people are facing rising costs like this in food, housing, energy and other basic necessities.

Inflation is a product of the anarchy of capitalist production—and it hits the working class hardest.
