Palestine forum stresses right of return

On Nov. 29, the 60th anniversary of the 1947 U.N. partition of Palestine, the San Francisco chapter of the ANSWER

Michel Shehadeh

Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) held a forum dedicated to the Palestinian liberation struggle at the Woman’s building in the Mission.

Activists from San Francisco and the East Bay filled the room to listen to Cristina Gutierez from Barrio Unidos, who recently returned from a visit to Palestine; Michel Shehadeh, Los Angeles 8 defendant and long-time Palestinian activist; and Richard Becker, Western Regional Coordinator of ANSWER.

Shehadeh illustrated the historical progression of the Zionist colonization of Palestine and the forming of the colonial state of Israel. He explained that the real issue of the Palestinian liberation struggle is the right of return.

Becker followed by elucidating the apartheid nature of the Israel state using historical documents. He also emphasized the importance of the demand for Palestinian return rather than the phony two-state proposal made at the Annapolis meeting between Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Shehadeh told pslweb.org, “Forums like this are very important. The American public should be informed on the Palestinian liberation struggle and the right of return, especially after the Annapolis event in its attempt to liquidate the right of return and Palestine.”
