Led by the Teamsters, nearly 5,000 people marched down Hollywood Blvd. chanting, “Strike, strike, shut it down, Hollywood’s a union town!” and “Hey Hey, Ho Ho, management can’t write the show!”
Labor was well represented; not only by the entertainment guilds and unions, such as the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, but also other unions such as the Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers, United Teachers Los Angeles and the California Nurses Association.
ANSWER placards were visible and members passed out hundreds of statements in solidarity with the writers.
The strike, which has entered its fourth week, is costing the entertainment industry $20 million a day. The writers’ spirits are high and the WGA has won not only the support of key producer-writers, but also the general public. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers—the negotiating group representing all of the major Hollywood studios—finally agreed to return to the bargaining table after walking out of talks on Nov. 4.
A media blackout is in effect regarding the negotiations. We will continue to follow this struggle and to stand with the writers in their fight against the big studio bosses.
