The Chicago Police Department announced on Oct. 9 that it is disbanding an “elite” drug and gang unit. The unit is under state and federal investigation for serious crimes, including armed violence, home invasion, kidnapping and plotting murder.
The unit is being disbanded as part of a publicity attempt to “clean up” the Chicago police department—a propaganda campaign that includes increased numbers of internal affairs officers and a “accountability measures combined with a disciplinary process,” according to Police Superintendent Dana Starks.
In reality, the intimidation tactics, criminal behavior and impunity of this particular unit is a systemic problem. The Chicago police department has a long and sordid history of brutality and racist violence.
