Gonzales resigns, nothing changed

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stepped down on Monday. Gonzales was in the unique position of having little

support from either of the two capitalist parties.

Gonzales became attorney general, the nation’s so-called “top cop,” after representing President Bush during his tenure as governor of Texas.

Gonzales was already a controversial figure when he was nominated, mainly due to his ardent support for torturing U.S. detainees. More recently, he was criticized for purging U.S. prosecutors who failed to follow the Bush administration’s political line.

Few in the ruling class but Bush seemed to want him to stay on as attorney general.

Nothing will change for the U.S. working class as a result of Gonzales’s resignation. Although workers should be happy to see him go, the capitalist politicians are already scrambling to replace him with a similar hack who will preside over the repression of millions.
