President Bush has nominated Gen. William E. “Kip” Ward to lead the newly created Africa Command (AFRICOM).
Unable to speak openly about geostrategic imperatives such as oil interests in Sudan and Nigeria and the suppression of armed resistance in Somalia, the Pentagon says instead that AFRICOM will help “promote peace and security” in Africa.
Putting an African American at the head of AFRICOM is a crude attempt by the Bush administration to veil the racist idea that Africans need the U.S. military to achieve “peace and security.”
U.S. imperialist intervention in the region has brought Africa nothing but war and destruction.
