Robert Davis, a 64-year-old Black man. They arrested Davis on false charges of public intoxication and battery. Davis had not had a drink in 25 years. The incident was videotaped by the media.

The three officers were arrested. One was not charged. He remains on the New Orleans police force. The other two were fired and charged. One of the fired cops killed himself on June 10, 2007.

The other cop, Robert Evangelist, was acquitted by district judge Frank Marullo. No jury was present.

In yet another display of racism in the U.S. judicial system, Marullo blamed Davis for getting beaten by the cops: “This event could have ended at any time if the man had put his hands behind his back.”
