Around 2,000 militant protesters confronted riot police in Rostok, Germany, on June 2 ahead of the Group of Eight (G8)
Anticipating working-class militancy, the German government deployed 16,000 agents and surrounded Heiligendamm with nine miles of steel fencing.
Local residents were issued documents to move around the area, as access to the city was tightly controlled. The police also raided homes in several cities to intimidate organizers.
The annual G8 summit brings together leaders from the eight wealthiest countries in the world. Invariably, people pour into the streets around the world to counter the imperialist agenda of the gathering.
