After a long, cold day, on Feb. 22, dozens came out to enjoy a night of poetry and hip-hop in New York’s Carlito’s Café.
The talent came out for Lyrical Revolt III, which featured political poets. Ben Becker and Yenica Cortes, both members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, hosted the event.
The fundraiser was dedicated to raise money for the March 17 March on the Pentagon. Literature about the protest was distributed to the audience. All were eager to participate in what will be a historic march against U.S. imperialism.
Many PSL members as well as ANSWER organizers helped organize the event, but the poets and the audience really made the event a complete success.
Here are a few lines of a poem delivered by Tom Ambrosino at Lyrical Revolt III. It pays tribute to women revolutionaries:
Give it up for woman, who we owe existence,
Nothing beats the feelin’, of growin’ wit ya sisters,
When you ain’t seen her for awhile and she’s knowin’ that you miss her …
You’re my lovers of humanity that handed back my sanity
And check me on vocabulary, nah we never had to marry,
Ya blood is in my capillaries,
Quantity to quality, attracted to equality
All the best aspects ya’ll are bringin’ out inside of me
When I hear you on the mic its like I hear Assata speak
True comradery, a letter to the system signed truly ours defiantly
Lyrical Revolt will be back when it is warmer out in May. Stay in touch and continue the fight!
