protest’s demands were “Bring the troops home now; stop funding the war.”

It was initiated by a loose coalition of organizations in coordination with the Jan. 27 Washington, D.C., protest called by the liberal group United for Peace and Justice.

In Los Angeles, although the turnout was modest, it was a spirited protest. Speakers like Cindy Sheehan and Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic kept the crowd energized. Kovic and Jim Lafferty, executive director of the National Lawyers Guild in Los Angeles, plugged the upcoming March 17 protest in LA.

The ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) had a large, militant and youthful contingent. Organizers were able to distribute more than 5,000 “Stop the war” stickers and flyers to promote March 17. People in the protest and passersby took the literature and pledged to build a huge action on March 17.

More than 100 organizations and another 300 individuals have endorsed March 17 in Los Angeles. Momentum is building for what will be a massive show of anti-imperialist sentiment on the fourth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
